UAE’s Green Visa – Is it Ideal for Expats?

In the year 2019, UAE government came up with the Golden Visa which was the economy game changer, and opened the doors for specialist to avail 10 years of UAE visa. Beginning of this week, UAE government introduced Green Visa, which allows highly skilled people to sponsor themselves without being tied up to any employer.

Green Visa marks the difference between the employment visa and residency visa.

Earlier before this scheme got introduced, expat needs to be under the employer’s visa to get the residency status in UAE, or else they have to either leave the country or find a new job.

  1. This new Visa scheme targets, highly skilled individuals, entrepreneurs, investors & top student graduates, allowing them to reside in UAE being able to sponsor themselves independently.
  2. Green Visa also lifts the restrictions for Freelancers, widows, and divorced people. This initiative opens up the gate for more foreigners to reside in the UAE, as expats shares the more populations than the UAE nationals, thus they reason for the economic growth of the country.
  3. “In Green visas, the person [holding the visa] is going to be self-dependent and he is not going to be attached to companies and he can sponsor parents and children up to 25 years instead of 18 years,” said Thani al-Zeyoudi, the minister of state for foreign trade.
  4. Now from Green visa, allows the expat to sponsor parents irrespective of their minimum salary or a rental contract for an apartment.
  5. Other new changes include the extension of business trip permits from three months to six months and extending the grace period for leaving the country after losing a job or retirement to 190 days instead of 30.
  6. One more add on to this Visa is the extension of grace period for leaving the country up-to 190 days instead 30 days after losing the job or retirement.
  7. Entrepreneurs around the globe are allowed to come for a business trip for 6 months instead of 3 months.

“Freelancers will have special dedicated visas…This is to attract experts, retirees and specialized people to niche sectors,” added al-Zeyoudi.

Freelancers who are looking for a self-employment or independent business in UAE can get the green visa and avail the benefits.
